Returns with Compelling New Track “Play God” out October 7
First New Music Since 2014
Reproductive Rights = Civil Rights
September 26, 2016: DIY pioneer and feminist icon Ani DiFranco continues to advocate for women as the November election looms. While on her current VOTE DAMMIT tour, DiFranco has been performing new song “Play God,” which reflects her beliefs in reproductive freedom. “Play God” (from her forthcoming full-length release) is the first new Ani DiFranco music to be released since her ALLERGIC TO WATER album in 2014, and will be available at all digital retailers on October 7th. About the track, DiFranco claims:
“Play God” is a song that recognizes reproductive freedom as a civil rights issue. As a society, it is time to acknowledge that unless a woman is in control of her own reproduction, she is not free, and it is the responsibility of our American government to protect and ensure the freedom of all American citizens. It is time we get serious about addressing and achieving this great unfinished business of civil rights in America. The true emancipation and equality of women is dependent on it.
In light of the current political climate in the United States, DiFranco is using her 2016 VOTE DAMMIT tour and her music to encourage fans to vote on Election Day and have their voices be heard. In addition, this year DiFranco launched BabeFest, a festival of music, comedy and political activism in her hometown of Buffalo. She was joined by comedian, political writer, and producer Lizz Winstead, co-creator of The Daily Show and Air America Radio.
In a career that has spanned over 25 years, DiFranco has released more than 20 studio albums, as well as live albums, EPs, and collaborations. Many of her songs have been woven with her views on the issues she’s passionate about. “Trickle Down” discusses the racism and gentrification, while “To The Teeth” speaks about the need for gun control, and “In or Out” questions society’s traditional sexuality labels.
